Dangers of VPNs & Remote Access

Technology has come a long way and still has a long way to go in many respects. It has revolutionised the way we work and has allowed for staff to work remotely and from any internet connected device.

COVID-19 has forced businesses to quickly setup and build systems to allow staff to work from home. However, there are so many solutions for Remote Access and so many types of VPNs. All of which are not equal, especially when it comes to security.

VPNs create a direct tunnel to your corporate network so your staff can work as if they were sitting at their desk in the office. This allows them to connect to corporate resources such as intranet, servers, files and other devices. This is great for staff to access these resources remotely, but it also serves as a double edged sword. If the staff member’s home device gets infected with a virus or malware, it can transmit over to your corporate network and cause havoc on those resources.

Innov8 IT has partnered with Sophos to provide our clients with a solution to combat this. If the endpoint software that we install on each computer detects malware, it alerts the firewall which then isolates that computer from accessing any corporate resources until the machine has been cleared of infections by one of our engineers. Thus, preventing damage to corporate data.

If you are a business owner and feel that your remote access or VPN might not be up to scratch, or just want that extra assurance to help put your mind at ease. Give Innov8 IT a call on 1300 453 878 for a free consultation.
